Concrete Epoxy Flooring Installation: DIY or Hiring the Professionals?

For the best outcome, it is always recommended that you let professionals handle your concrete epoxy flooring installation. However, if you do want to take it on as a DIY project, here is a brief guide on the steps you need to follow;

Surface preparation- To create a watertight and smooth surface, the pavement you are coating must be adequately prepped. You can easily do this by using a grinder (with a diamond wheel blade) to shave the driveway’s surface and open the slab’s pores. This is to ensure a strong bond between the substrate and the epoxy compound.

Cleaning– After using the grinder to shave back the pavement, use an industrial vacuum to remove all dust and residue before thoroughly cleaning the surface.

Priming– Prime with a suitable epoxy primer. This ensures that the epoxy adequately bonds with the substrate. It also reduces the risk of bubbles forming under your final coat.

Coating– Thoroughly mix the hardener and resin with an electric mixer and immediately apply it to your driveway with a high-quality roller. After the first coat is applied, you will need to let it dry for 24 hours before applying the next one. During this time, cracks, holes and trapped dust may appear. Be sure to lightly sand down any affected area and clean it with a vacuum. Once there are no cracks left to be sealed, proceed to apply the final coat and allow it to cure for 72 hours before using the driveway.
