Tarmac Driveway Brixton
A new tarmac driveway is the fastest way to sort out parking at a Brixton property. Kane Construction Services is a family-run surfacing and groundworks firm trading since 2003, and we lay machine-finished tarmac driveways across Brixton and the surrounding SW2 and SW9 streets.
Most single driveways are excavated, sub-based and surfaced within two to three days. Every job starts with a free site visit, so what you get is a written fixed price and a firm start date, not a rough figure over the phone.

Low Maintenance Tarmac Driveways Brixton
Tarmac, properly called tarmacadam, is graded stone bound with bitumen and rolled hot so it sets as one continuous sheet. You will also see it sold as asphalt driveway surfacing, and for driveway work the two describe much the same finish. Because there are no joints or gaps, weeds have nowhere to push through and there are no loose stones to end up on the pavement, which matters on the tighter terraced streets around Brixton.
Upkeep is genuinely light. A sweep every few weeks and a wash down once or twice a year keeps it looking sharp. If moss appears on a shaded north-facing frontage, a stiff brush and a moss treatment clears it. Fresh oil drips lift with a degreaser and warm water, so deal with them early rather than letting them soak in. One thing to avoid is a pressure washer on a narrow jet setting, because it can strip bitumen out of the top layer and expose the stone beneath.
Depth is what decides whether a driveway lasts. A domestic drive taking cars and the odd van needs a properly compacted sub-base, a binder course over it and then the surface course. Cutting depth to cut price is the single most common reason a cheap driveway starts rutting and cracking within a couple of years. We confirm the exact build-up on site once we have seen your ground conditions and know what the drive has to carry. Our typical tarmac surfacing application methods walks through how we build a surface up in layers.
Trusted Tarmac Driveway Contractors Brixton
Kane Construction Services was set up in 2003 by Tom Kane, who learned the trade working alongside his father. It is still a family business. Tom’s wife Susan runs the office as company secretary, and their sons Callum and Kian work across both sites and quotations, so when you ring you are speaking to the people who will be on your driveway.
We own our plant rather than hiring it in by the day, including a 14-tonne excavator and our own paving machine. That is why we can machine-lay a driveway to a consistent depth and finish instead of raking it out by hand, and it means our start dates do not depend on a hire yard having a machine free.
We hold ISO 9001 certification and are Constructionline registered, and we work for schools, councils and commercial clients alongside homeowners. Those clients audit our paperwork, method statements and site standards, and the same standards come with us onto a domestic job. You can read what customers have said on our client reviews, see the scale of work we handle on our commercial projects, or read more about the family behind the firm on our about us.

Our Process
Brixton driveways come with their own logistics. Streets are narrow, kerbside parking is tight, and there is often nowhere to stand a skip without a permit. We plan all of that before we start, so we arrive with correctly sized plant, workable access arrangements and a clear route for getting waste off site. A project manager stays across the job from survey to sign-off, and most single driveways are finished in two to three days.
Team visit and basic survey
We measure up, check levels and drainage, look at where water currently runs, and confirm access for plant and deliveries.
Discuss budget
You get an itemised written quote covering excavation, waste removal, sub-base, surfacing and edgings, so you can see what each part of the job costs.
Project Initiation
We agree a start date and sort access and any permits needed, then dig out, install drainage and edgings and build up the sub-base.
Project Completion & delivery
We machine-lay and roll the surface, clear the site, walk the finished drive with you and confirm when it is ready to use.
About The Brixton Area
Brixton sits in the London Borough of Lambeth, around four miles south of the river, and most of its housing stock is Victorian and Edwardian terraces alongside a large number of converted flats. That shapes driveway work here in a few practical ways.
Front gardens are often shallow, so usable parking depth is limited and the layout has to be planned around bay windows, front steps and bin storage. Much of the borough sits on London clay, which holds water and moves with the seasons, so a properly built and compacted sub-base matters more here than it does on free-draining ground. And with controlled parking across much of SW2 and SW9, off-street parking makes a real difference to daily life, which is why so much of our residential work in the area is converting a front garden rather than replacing an existing drive.
We cover Brixton, Brixton Hill, Herne Hill, Tulse Hill, Loughborough Junction, Stockwell and Clapham, and we work across the rest of the capital through our tarmac contractors London and tarmac surfacing London services.
Planning Permission And Permeable Surfaces
Since October 2008, paving more than five square metres of a front garden in England with an impermeable surface has needed planning permission. There are two straightforward ways around it: use a permeable surface, or design the driveway so rainwater drains to a border, lawn or soakaway inside your own boundary instead of running out onto the pavement.
Standard sealed tarmac is impermeable, so on a typical Brixton front garden this is a decision worth making at quote stage rather than after the work is done. We can lay porous asphalt, build in drainage installation to direct water to a permeable area, or look at a resin bound surfacing or gravel driveway finish if a fully permeable build suits your frontage better. We will tell you honestly which route applies to your property at the survey.
No Driveway Project Is Too Big Or Too Small
From a single parking space in a Brixton front garden to resurfacing the shared forecourt of a block of converted flats, the standard of work does not change. We handle new driveways and full driveway construction for homeowners, and we take on private roads, forecourts and estate car parks for landlords, managing agents and commercial clients. If you are not sure whether your job is big enough to be worth a call, call anyway and we will tell you straight.
Why Choose Us?
Driveways, patios, paths and sports courts for homeowners across South London. We handle the full job in house, from excavation and drainage through to the finished surface and edgings. See our full range of residential services.

Residential Construction Projects
The residential construction projects we regularly carry out range from resin bound and block paving driveways to patios and sports courts. Because we are a registered and trusted contractor with Surrey and West Sussex councils we carry out the dropped kerbs and crossover

Commercial Groundworks
Large area surfacing including roads, car parks, playgrounds and forecourts. Because we own our own paving machine, rollers and excavators we can mobilise quickly and keep big jobs on programme. More on our commercial groundworks.

Civil Engineering
Our civil engineering team handles the technical side, including levels, drainage design and ground preparation, so demanding sites are built correctly from the base up rather than patched at the surface.
Types Of Driveways That We Provide
Resin
A Resin driveway gives a smooth, seamless finish in a wide choice of aggregate colours, and a resin bound build is permeable, which helps with the front garden planning rules. The neatest looking option of the four.
Tarmac
Asphalt driveway surfacing uses a finer aggregate than traditional tarmacadam, giving a tighter, smoother finish. Porous grades are available where you need water to drain through the surface rather than off it.
Asphalt
Opting for an asphalt driveway means choosing a low-maintenance surface that enhances your home's visual allure and aesthetic charm with remarkable results.
Block Paving
Block paving driveway work suits period frontages and lets you set out borders, contrasting bands and patterns. Individual blocks can also be lifted and reset if a service ever needs digging up.
Any of these can be finished with a block paved or kerbed border to frame the drive and hold the edges. See road kerbs, slabs and edging, or talk to us about landscaping if the front garden needs planting or levels work as well.

I was absolutely dreading getting my driveway done, you hear so many horror stories. I searched and contacted several firms to get quotes and for people to come out and have a look. Painful. Then found KCS… I sent a message and in less than 24hrs an appointment was made. Kian came over to view the job, measured up and came up with several options, within 48hrs everything was agreed including price and a date was agreed. The team turned up bang on time, talked me through the job and started. No stress, no drama and the finished job is excellent. I absolutely recommend this company and I want to thank everyone involved in getting my driveway looking fantastic. Thank you Kian for making this happen.Posted on Google![]()

Delighted with my new drive and fencing and Kane constructions work in perparing the site laying the porous ashfelt, and topping with the resin finish. They had to wait for suitable weather to lay the resin . I was kept informed and the job finished to a high standard.Posted on Google![]()

Kane Construction Services have carried out two jobs for me over the last ten years. I had a garden completely dug out and a driveway laid 8 years ago and when I moved house I would not have chosen any other company to build me a brand new drive. When you find excellent work ethics, great workmanship, with trustworthy and pleasant staff you don't want to choose anyone else. Tom always makes the job clear, communicates well and has a very clear price. Tom employees staff that really do know what they're doing. With decades of experience in construction, you know you are in safe hands with Kane Construction Services. I have no hesitation in promoting their work and recommend them to friends constantly.Posted on Google![]()

Tarmac Driveways – FAQ’s
It depends on the size of the area, how much excavation and waste removal is involved, the sub-base build-up, and any drainage or edgings needed. Ground conditions vary street to street in Brixton, so we do not quote a price per square metre without seeing the site. Book a free site visit and you will get an itemised written price.
A domestic driveway carrying cars and light vans needs a well-compacted sub-base with a binder course and surface course laid over it. The exact depths depend on your ground conditions and the loads the drive will take, which is why we confirm the build-up at survey rather than quoting a standard figure. Under-specifying the depth is the usual reason a cheap drive fails early.
A properly built tarmac driveway will typically give you 12 to 15 years or more before it needs resurfacing. Depth, drainage and how well the sub-base was compacted make far more difference to lifespan than the surface layer itself.
If your front garden hard surface is more than five square metres and you use standard impermeable tarmac, then yes. You can avoid it by using a permeable surface, or by draining rainwater to a border, lawn or soakaway within your own boundary. A dropped kerb is a separate application through Lambeth Council. We will talk you through which applies to your property.
Tarmac needs time to cure. It is normally fine for light foot traffic within 24 to 48 hours, and we will confirm when it is ready for vehicles before we leave, since curing depends on the weather and the depth laid. For the first few weeks, avoid turning your wheels while the car is stationary, as that can scuff the fresh surface.
Sweep it regularly and wash it down once or twice a year. A stiff brush and a moss treatment handles moss on shaded frontages, and a degreaser lifts fresh oil marks. Keep pressure washers on a wide fan setting and off the highest pressure, or you risk stripping bitumen from the top layer.
Sometimes. If the sub-base is sound and the problem is limited to the surface, an overlay is a cost-effective option. If the drive is rutting, holding water or the base has failed, resurfacing over the top will only hide the problem for a season. We will tell you which situation you are in at the survey.
