Laying a tarmac surface is a detailed process that underpins a long-lasting and functional driveway or pathway.  Professional tarmac installation commences with thorough groundwork, the cornerstone for the finished product’s stability. This groundwork involves excavating the designated area to a specific depth, typically around 300mm, and removing any existing materials.  A crucial aspect of this stage is attention to drainage. The subgrade is carefully levelled to ensure water flows away from the surface, preventing pooling and potential damage.  This may involve incorporating features like channels or soakaways to effectively manage rainwater runoff.

Following this in-depth groundwork, skilled professionals construct a layered foundation using high-quality materials. A geotextile membrane is often introduced at this stage to suppress weed growth and provide additional stability.  Next, a layer of sub-base aggregate, typically crushed concrete, is thoroughly compacted to create a firm and solid base. The thickness of this layer will vary depending on the anticipated load the tarmac will bear.  Once compacted, edging is installed to confine the tarmac and prevent it from spreading or cracking over time.  Finally, the tarmac itself is laid in multiple layers, starting with a binder course that provides a strong foundation for the wearing course, the top layer that users will come into contact with.  Each layer is precisely levelled, rolled, and compacted to ensure a smooth, level, and hard-wearing surface.
