Road Surfacing Materials We Use
Tarmac is the most widely used road surfacing material in the UK, valued for its smooth finish, durability under traffic loading, and ease of marking. Depending on the road's use, traffic volume, and design specification, we lay:
- Hot-rolled asphalt for heavily trafficked carriageways
- Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) where rut resistance is needed
- Dense bitumen macadam for general carriageway work
- Coloured asphalt for bus lanes, cycle lanes, and traffic calming
Our Road Surfacing Process
- Site visit and survey – walk the site with you and check ground, drainage, and access
- Detailed quote – fixed pricing and a timeline that works for you
- Traffic management – arranged with the council where needed and notice to neighbours
- Preparation – old surface removed
- Surfacing – laid with our own paving machine and rolled to specification
- Finishing and sign-off – line marking, kerb finishing, and a clean handover
Our typical tarmac surfacing application methods sets out the technical detail in full.

I was absolutely dreading getting my driveway done, you hear so many horror stories. I searched and contacted several firms to get quotes and for people to come out and have a look. Painful. Then found KCS… I sent a message and in less than 24hrs an appointment was made. Kian came over to view the job, measured up and came up with several options, within 48hrs everything was agreed including price and a date was agreed. The team turned up bang on time, talked me through the job and started. No stress, no drama and the finished job is excellent. I absolutely recommend this company and I want to thank everyone involved in getting my driveway looking fantastic. Thank you Kian for making this happen.Posted on Google![]()

Delighted with my new drive and fencing and Kane constructions work in perparing the site laying the porous ashfelt, and topping with the resin finish. They had to wait for suitable weather to lay the resin . I was kept informed and the job finished to a high standard.Posted on Google![]()

Kane Construction Services have carried out two jobs for me over the last ten years. I had a garden completely dug out and a driveway laid 8 years ago and when I moved house I would not have chosen any other company to build me a brand new drive. When you find excellent work ethics, great workmanship, with trustworthy and pleasant staff you don't want to choose anyone else. Tom always makes the job clear, communicates well and has a very clear price. Tom employees staff that really do know what they're doing. With decades of experience in construction, you know you are in safe hands with Kane Construction Services. I have no hesitation in promoting their work and recommend them to friends constantly.Posted on Google![]()

Road Surfacing – FAQ’s
Most road surfacing we lay can take light traffic within 6–8 hours and full traffic loading within 24 hours, depending on weather and the asphalt mix used. For more on this, here is our guide on how long tarmac takes to set.
A well-laid asphalt road typically lasts 15 to 20 years before full resurfacing is needed, though sections with heavy traffic, poor drainage, or shallow utility covers may need attention sooner. Regular surface dressing can extend that life considerably.
Light drizzle is usually workable, but heavy or persistent rain affects compaction and bond, so we’ll reschedule rather than compromise the finish. We explain this fully on our blog laying tarmac in the rain.
Yes. On council and highway projects we arrange traffic management to the specification required by the local authority, including lane closures, signage, and resident notification.
Yes. We surface private estate roads, agricultural tracks, courtyards, and shared access roads.
