Coloured Asphalt Surfacing for Driveways, Playgrounds & Public Spaces
Kane Construction Services lays coloured asphalt across Surrey, London and West Sussex for clients who want a hard-wearing surface that does not look like a typical black road. We have been installing coloured asphalt driveways, playgrounds, cycle paths and car parks for more than two decades, and every job is delivered by our own ISO 9001 accredited team. Whether you need a buff finish to soften a country driveway, a red surface to mark out a school cycle lane, or a custom colour for a commercial forecourt, we will price the work honestly and finish it cleanly.
What Is Coloured Asphalt?
Coloured asphalt, also known as coloured tarmac or tarmacadam, is made by mixing pigments and coloured aggregate into the asphalt so the colour runs through the surface rather than sitting on top like paint. It offers the same durability and drainage as standard black asphalt, with long-lasting shades such as red, buff, green, blue and grey for driveways and other surfaces.
If you are weighing options for a residential project, you may also want to compare coloured asphalt against our resin bound surfacing and block paving driveway finishes. Each has different costs, looks and maintenance needs, and we are happy to walk you through which one suits your site.
Where We Use Coloured Asphalt
Coloured asphalt suits any surface that has to take regular wear but also needs to look the part or guide people safely. We install it for:
Residential driveways and pathways – A coloured asphalt driveway sits softer in the landscape than standard black, which matters on period properties and rural plots. Buff and red are the most common requests we get for homes around Surrey and the wider South East.
Playgrounds and school grounds – We have laid coloured asphalt for primary schools, nurseries and play areas across our catchment. Bright, contrasting colours work well for marked games, sensory zones and trim trails. This pairs naturally with our playground surfacing work and our wider experience as a schools contractor.
Cycle paths, footpaths and shared routes – Red and green coloured asphalt is widely used to mark cycle lanes and pedestrian routes so road users see them quickly. We deliver this work for councils and private landowners as part of our footpaths and road surfacing services.
Car parks, forecourts and commercial spaces – Coloured asphalt is useful in car park surfacing and forecourt surfacing for splitting bays, marking entry routes or matching corporate branding without relying on paint that will fade.
Tennis and sports courts – Sports court colour coating sits on top of a sound asphalt base. We can lay the base and apply the colour coating in one project, including for tennis court surfacing and multi-use games areas.
Colour Options and Finishes
We work with manufacturer-grade pigment systems, which means a wide range of colours is available. The most common requests are:
- Buff for traditional and rural driveways
- Red for cycle paths, school markings and statement driveways
- Green for cycle lanes and bordering zones
- Black with coloured chippings rolled in for a textured, decorative finish
- Custom blends matched to a brand colour or specification
We will bring colour samples to your site visit so you can see how each shade reads in your light and against your building. Asphalt with coloured chippings is also worth considering if you want a slightly more textured, premium look without moving to resin.
How Much Does Coloured Asphalt Cost?
Coloured asphalt sits at a small premium over standard black asphalt because of the pigment and aggregate cost. The exact figure depends on:
- The size and shape of the area
- Site access and existing surface condition
- Whether sub-base or drainage work is needed
- Choice of colour, since some pigments cost more than others
- Edging, kerbs and finishing details
We do not publish a fixed rate per square metre because every site is different and we would rather quote you accurately than rough you in. Your quote from us is itemised, fixed in writing, and held for a sensible window so you can plan around it. Have a look at our commercial projects for a sense of the scale and types of work we cost regularly.

I was absolutely dreading getting my driveway done, you hear so many horror stories. I searched and contacted several firms to get quotes and for people to come out and have a look. Painful. Then found KCS… I sent a message and in less than 24hrs an appointment was made. Kian came over to view the job, measured up and came up with several options, within 48hrs everything was agreed including price and a date was agreed. The team turned up bang on time, talked me through the job and started. No stress, no drama and the finished job is excellent. I absolutely recommend this company and I want to thank everyone involved in getting my driveway looking fantastic. Thank you Kian for making this happen.Posted on Google![]()

Delighted with my new drive and fencing and Kane constructions work in perparing the site laying the porous ashfelt, and topping with the resin finish. They had to wait for suitable weather to lay the resin . I was kept informed and the job finished to a high standard.Posted on Google![]()

Kane Construction Services have carried out two jobs for me over the last ten years. I had a garden completely dug out and a driveway laid 8 years ago and when I moved house I would not have chosen any other company to build me a brand new drive. When you find excellent work ethics, great workmanship, with trustworthy and pleasant staff you don't want to choose anyone else. Tom always makes the job clear, communicates well and has a very clear price. Tom employees staff that really do know what they're doing. With decades of experience in construction, you know you are in safe hands with Kane Construction Services. I have no hesitation in promoting their work and recommend them to friends constantly.Posted on Google![]()

Coloured Asphalt – FAQ’s
Yes. In the UK, “coloured tarmac” and “coloured asphalt” usually mean the same pigmented bituminous surface.
A well-laid coloured asphalt driveway can last 15–20 years with the right sub-base, drainage and light maintenance.
Not like painted surfaces. The colour is mixed through the asphalt using UV-stable pigments, though a slight tone change is normal at first.
Coloured asphalt costs more than standard black asphalt due to specialist pigments and aggregates. The final price depends on colour, area size and access.
Yes. Damaged sections can often be repaired if the base is sound. If the sub-base has failed, relaying may be the better long-term option.
