The Tarmac Surfacing Process

Preparation is the most essential part of the surfacing process. Excavation is done first unless the tarmac is being overlaid, we dig usually 300mm down from the finish level depending on the circumstance. Edgings are then installed to keep the tarmac in place; there are various options for this, the most popular being concrete edging, for a more aesthetic look, granite sets or brick edging are favoured. A layer of woven membrane is then laid down to help stop weed growth and minimise sinking.

Drainage is required on most tarmac projects and is vital to prevent the build-up of water on the surface to make your tarmac last longer. There are various options for drainage. For a sleek minimal look, a slim-line aco channel is a preferred option. If the project sees a lot of water, popular choices include French drains and large aco channels.

The final stage is of course laying the tarmac, for small or hard to get to jobs we lay by hand however, for larger ones we use a paving machine. We first lay down a base layer of around 2-inch thickness and compact it various times. A finer tarmac is then laid to a thickness of approximately 50mm.
